Life Drawing with Kathryn Durst

Developing strong drawing skills is the basis for all kinds of artistic practice. Leaning to draw from the figure is the best way to improve your observational drawing skills.

Artwork by Kathryn Durst

Join instructor Kathryn Durst as she leads you through the process of seeing and observing the model from a drawing perspective, and translating that impression onto the page. This course will help students obtain the basic skill of drawing the human form.

We will explore quick 'gesture' drawings and longer poses, discover volumetric drawing using contour, outline and tonal modeling, and experiment with different media and expressive mark making.

This course is offered in 4 sessions. Attendees are welcome to sign up for any number of sessions and attend in any order.

This is an adult course. Participants must be 18+. No previous experience required.

Session Dates:

Session 1: Wednesday, November 8th 6pm-8:30pm

Session 2: Wednesday, December 13th, 6pm-8:30pm

Session 3: Wednesday, January 17th, 6pm-8:30pm

Session 4: Wednesday, February 14th, 6pm-8:30pm

Notes from the Instructor:

Given the sensitive nature of working with nude models, students are expected to conduct themselves in a mature, professional, courteous, and respectful manner at all times. The instructor, the model, and all students have the right to a safe, productive and friendly environment. Please ensure you use the models’ correct pronouns. Failure to do so will result in being asked to leave the class.

Do not touch the model. Always use your own body to describe or suggest a change in the model’s pose. You are also encouraged to change your own position in the room to see a changed pose, but please give the model lots of space while doing so. While the model is undraped, artists are expected to remain quiet and actively drawing. Please refrain from side-conversations.

Absolutely no photography permitted. Please keep cell phones turned off and tucked away until the final critique. At that point artists are welcome to photograph their own artwork, and others’ artwork with permission.

I strive to create a safe environment which is conducive to learning and making art. I believe that creativity and innovation can only happen when there is an environment of openness to be vulnerable and take creative risks. Put-downs and criticism are not tolerated unless within the framework of a constructive artistic critique, centred on improvement and growth.

Registration for this series will open Monday, October 9 at 10AM EST.
